The Zakynthian carnival has its roots
in the time of Venetian rule. The carnival is a celebration for
everyone, with dancing, eating and drinking, it ends on the Sunday
before the beginning of Lent. Although it has a long history,
it is still very much celebrated on Zakynthos where there is much celebration
with parties and dances, parades, music and fireworks and many
traditional customs are re-enacted. The festivities end with the
traditional "Funeral of the Masks".
