Residents Permit

For EU citizens this seems to be used only when purchasing (or importing) or selling a car. It is an EU requirement to register at the local police station after a certain time in another country but Greece still issue a permit.

Non EU citizens must prove that they have sufficient money to live and have medical insurance. They do not make their application at the police station.

Take 6 passport photos, one photocopy of passport and passport to the local police station (We used Lagana Police Station which is nearest to where we lived).

The following information was requested:

  • Name of father & mother (seems to be required for all Greek documents)
  • Address in Greece
  • Tax Number
  • Date of most recent arrival in Greece

Our first visit we were told to return on Friday at 10am. The second visit the forms were filled out (by hand), about 6 of them, all required our signature. We were then told to collect the permit in 3 days. Due to other commitments we collected 2 weeks later.

The permit is valid for 5 years

UPDATE APRIL 2008
-  changes coming soon due to new EU Rules
-  policy is different at different police stations
