Greek
Tax Number
Before
you apply for a tax number, you should consult an
accountant. There may be a legal requirement to complete
a tax return annually. This certainly applies to anyone
owning property, even if they live outside of Greece.
The purchase of a motor vehicle is also declared on the
tax return. The tax office want to know where your money
comes from if you buy a house or car. It is therefore
essential to have bank information for money transferred
from overseas. We would not advise bringing money in a
suitcase, as the tax office will assume you are working
and not declaring your income.
You
will need a tax number:
-
To
buy land or property
-
To
buy a car (not sure about motor bike)
-
To
get a telephone connection (if you rent your
landlord may do this but he will get the bill)
-
To
open a bank account
-
To
get electric connected (if you rent your landlord
may do this but he will get the bill)
The tax
number is obtained at the local tax office, it was not
hard to get but you are better to have a Greek speaking
person with you who knows the system. There is a little
English spoken there. Beware there are
some people who will charge you to do this
for you, when I am sure a friendly Greek or Greek
speaking
person will help you for nothing.
There
is no charge for the issue of a tax number, probably the
only thing the tax office does for free. We had to fill
out a form and return the next day but how long will
depend on the time of year you apply.
You
will need your passport and a residential address in
Greece. Your passport will be needed for nearly everything you
do in Greece.
NOTE:- The tax office is
located between K. Lombardou (The main road along
the sea front) and Filita which runs parallel.
Very near the back of Piraeus Bank.
