To Import or to buy a car

Postby sk0rp10n » Mon Sep 15, 2008 2:38 pm

I am led to believe the rules re motoring and car ownership are changing.
Does anyone know which is the better route to take.. Buying a car from Zante.. (and if so, does anyone know where the best place is to buy a small run around car .. and which is the better option diesel or petrol?)..
Btw, how much is a small 1400~1500 cc Diesel car say 5 yrs old

or to drive my car down through Italy, and leave it on Zante..

Thanks (confused.com) :-)

Firstly, have you read the article, on the main site, about importing a car. You will get some idea about the paperwork required in bringing a UK car to Greece.

http://www.livinginzante.com/ImportingCar.htm

Many people still drive UK registered cars but many (most?) are probably not fully legal. You can only drive/keep a car from one Europeans country in another for 6 months. That is an EU rule.

Are the rules changing? We do not know. About a year ago we were told that you no longer have to pay the "tax" if you do the paperwork mentioned in our article. One visitor to the website told us that all he paid was about €300 for an import agent to process the paperwork through customs.

For secondhand car prices see this site. It is in greek but you should be able to use it.

There are not so many diesel cars in Greece as the rest of europe. I have one and often get asked if i really want diesel. Diesel is about 1.30€ per litre about 10p more expensive than standard unleaded. This is opposite to what it was 3 or 4 years ago when we decided to import ours.

There are a few car dealers on the island but they seem expensive. We are told the cheapest way is to buy ex rental, direct from the company at the end of the season.
