In order to do anything more than breath, you need a tax number. If you buy a car the tax man wants to know how you can afford it. If you buy a house he definitely wants to know where the money came from.
Getting the tax number is probably the simplist transaction at any government department. Having said this it is probably best to get a Greek speaker to help as few people in the tax office speak english.
When tansfering money from another country, the bank should provide a document for the tax department. You probably need an accountant to fill in the tax return.

Hi,
I'm spending next summer in Zakynthos, probably Argassi and hope to get some bar work to keep me in pocket money. Does anybody know if I need to get a tax number for this? I'm not coming over until the end of May, but just want to get everything organised as soon as possible.
Many thanks, Jude

Hi Jude

If you are just coming for the summer, then you won't need a tax number, But if you want to open a bank a/c you will need one.

We hear that many seasonal workers are paid cash and therefore the taxman does not know about those workers. To be fully legal the employer must pay social security (IKA), I guess in this case you would need a tax number. You have to earn something like ?15,000 before paying any income tax.
In order to work in a bar or resturant you should have a health certificate. This is obtained from the hospital after a chest x-ray and blood test. This checks for any contagious disease. Don't know how rigidly this is enforced.
