At the time of writing, March 2015, the property market is very depressed. Realistic prices are about 50% of what they were at the height of the property boom around 2005. Many sellers are still trying to get close to that high price but these properties are not selling. The only properties selling are the realistically priced ones. It is difficult to know what realistic prices are today, especially when browsing Real Estate websites, where some properties are priced realistically and others are priced at the sellers dream figure.
Most important - make sure you can build on the land you wish to buy. There are lots of stories about people who bought land that was not buildable.
This project was a traditional concrete structure. Other recognised building methods, suitable for earthquake regions, are steel frame and wooden construction. Although the majority of houses are still the traditional concrete design, steel constructions are becoming more popular as they are cheaper.
